A renewed political standoff is emerging in Kenya following a fresh public exchange between President William Ruto and his former deputy, Rigathi Gachagua, highlighting a growing rift between the two leaders.
The latest developments come after both figures, speaking at separate public events, issued sharp remarks directed at each other—signaling an escalation in their ongoing fallout.
Addressing his supporters, Gachagua criticized the current administration, accusing it of falling short of public expectations and urging leaders to remain accountable to citizens.
“We cannot keep quiet when things are not going right,” he said.
“Kenyans deserve leadership that listens and responds to their concerns.”
In response, President Ruto defended his administration’s record, dismissing the criticism and questioning the motives behind it. Speaking at a different function, the president maintained that his government remains focused on delivering its development agenda.
“Those making noise today had the opportunity to serve,” the president stated.
“Our priority is to work for Kenyans and fulfill our mandate.”
The exchange reflects a significant shift in the relationship between the two leaders, who were once close allies during the 2022 General Election. Their political partnership has since deteriorated, with each now taking an increasingly opposing stance.
Since his exit from office, Gachagua has emerged as a vocal critic of the government, particularly on issues affecting ordinary citizens. Meanwhile, the President and his allies have accused him of fueling political divisions.
The ongoing public dispute has drawn mixed reactions, with some Kenyans viewing it as a sign of democratic accountability, while others express concern that the confrontations could divert attention from pressing national challenges.
As the situation continues to unfold, political observers note that the rivalry may have broader implications for the country’s political landscape in the months ahead.
