Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua continued with a barrage of attacks on his former boss President William Ruto describing the much hyped Nyota programme as a re-election tool.

Speaking to reporters in Nairobi, Gachagua did not hold back in his assessment of the administration’s handling of several key national issues including those targeting the youths.

Gachagua accused President Ruto of failing the people of Northern Kenya, a region he said had been promised development projects that never materialized.

He highlighted drought-relief measures, including water pans and dams that were supposed to be built but have not been delivered. He also criticised the government’s allocation of funds to arid counties, contending the amount was far too small to meet actual needs.

“William Ruto should explain to the people of Northern Kenya why he keeps on lying to them anytime he visits the region with no tangible development.” said Gachagua.

He also criticised the government’s drought response, urging President Ruto to take relief food and water personally to affected communities.

“We wanted to tell William Ruto, as he goes to the north, that the problem of the northern people is the problem of accountability ... I would like to ask him to carry food and water to the people of northern Kenya,” he added.

In a surprising turn, Gachagua also alleged that the Ruto administration is attempting to intimidate former President Uhuru Kenyatta, whom he said is working with other leaders from the Mount Kenya region to foster unity ahead of the2027 elections. He insisted that former President Uhuru should not be silenced or blamed for the country’s problems — a message clearly directed at President Ruto’s recent rhetoric that has sought to tie previous administrations to ongoing challenges.

Beyond specific complaints, Gachagua used the platform to criticise Ruto’s overall management of the country, saying the president has not lived up to his own campaign promises. He ridiculed what he described as attempts to deflect responsibility for current hardships by blaming predecessors, asserting that Ruto alone should be held accountable for the nation’s struggles.
