Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has declared an end to the political alliance between Central Kenya and President William Ruto, saying that the region will not support Ruto’s re-election bid in 2027.

Speaking from his home in Wamunyoro, Nyeri County during an interview with vernacular radio stations on Sunday evening, Gachagua described the decision as an "interim report" on the evolving political landscape in Mt. Kenya.

“We, the people of Central Kenya, have severed political ties with President Ruto from today,” he said. “We will not support him in 2027.”

In a significant political shift, Gachagua also announced that Mt. Kenya leaders would exit the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA), signaling an end to its alliance with Ruto’s camp.

“We are done with UDA,” he declared. “Never again will we go into an election without our own political party. Last time, we attended the wedding in the groom’s car, but when we got to the river, he told us to alight and picked other people.”

Gachagua further warned that Mt. Kenya leaders who continue to align with President Ruto would face political consequences.

“This region will vote out all leaders who prioritize personal gain over the community. Those who betray our people will not see leadership again in Mt. Kenya,” he said.

Gachagua revealed that consultations are underway with political figures from Samburu, Kisii, Western Kenya, and Ukambani to build a broader coalition.

He said a new political party would be launched in May, but he declined to reveal its name or details, citing fears of sabotage.

“The party is ready, but I am careful not to release the name or finer details too soon. We are building a strong network of allies across the country,” he noted.

The announcement signals a major political shift in Kenya, setting the stage for an intense battle ahead of the 2027 general elections.
