The 6th Jumuiya Agribusiness and Blue Economy Investment Conference (JABEIC), set for November 27-29, 2024, in Voi, Taita Taveta County, was officially launched at a press briefing yesterday. Richard Kipepo, CEO of Taita Taveta Development and Investment Corporation, emphasized the importance of strengthened partnerships that will pave the way for sustainable investments in the green and blue economies. He highlighted that the region, rich in resources and natural beauty, holds significant potential for unlocking economic growth, particularly in sectors such as tourism, agriculture, and aquaculture.

The Chairman of the Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KNCCI) Taita Taveta chapter, Andrew Mwamburi, reiterated that the conference’s theme resonates with regional cooperation. “Taita Taveta is a hidden treasure, with vast opportunities in eco-tourism, aquaculture, and horticulture. This conference will highlight the untapped potential the county has to offer,” Mwamburi said, encouraging both local and international investors to take advantage of the resources in the region.

The conference will focus on promoting sustainable aquaculture as a solution for food security, leveraging the county’s water catchment areas and irrigation systems. With Taita Taveta’s vast arable land and favorable climate, the region is ripe for investments in fruit farming and horticulture.

Josephine Mwikali from Safaricom underscored the need for environmental sustainability, particularly regarding the health of the ocean and waterways. “A healthy ecosystem is essential for both economic growth and community development. By enabling better resource allocation in agriculture and maritime sectors, we can empower thriving communities for generations to come,” she said.

Tourism remains a cornerstone of the county’s investment strategy, with a focus on promoting eco-tourism, birdwatching, and conservation efforts. The county’s scenic beauty, combined with its rich cultural heritage, makes it an attractive destination for domestic and international tourists.

Gertrude Shuwe, the CEC for Trade, Tourism, Culture, and Industrialization, expressed optimism that the conference will boost job creation, showcase the county’s unique culture, and open doors for MSMEs to exhibit their products to potential investors. The county government is actively seeking partnerships to drive tourism and create employment opportunities.

One of the critical topics set to be discussed at the conference is the establishment of a dry port and the demand for a Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Taita Taveta. These initiatives are expected to transform the county into a hub for trade and commerce, increasing business opportunities and attracting investors.

Deputy Governor Christine Kilalo, speaking on behalf of Governor Andrew Mwadime, highlighted the county’s assets in the agricultural and blue economy sectors. She emphasized the importance of renewable energy projects, such as solar power, to reduce carbon footprints and promote sustainable development. Additionally, she noted that plans are underway for the development of an airport, which will further boost business and tourism.

The conference will also explore the success of the World Bank-funded integrated water project, which has been identified as a game-changer for the county. It promises to improve water supply for agriculture and households, supporting the region’s long-term economic stability.

JABEIC Chairman Emmanuel Nzai urged businesses, organizations, and investors to participate in the conference by sponsoring or showcasing their innovations. “This is a platform to explore investment opportunities in agribusiness, the blue economy, tourism, and infrastructure, therefore I call upon the youth with innovative and sustainable ideas to come showcase them in the presence of potential investors and funders,” he said.
