Mombasa Youth Engage with Maritime Industry Stakeholders, Explore Abundant Opportunities

In a dynamic exchange of ideas, Mombasa's youth connected with crucial figures in the maritime and shipping industry during the inaugural Mombasa Youth Dialogue on Maritime and Shipping held at the Bandari Maritime Academy. The panel discussion, moderated by Mombasa Member of County Assembly Patrick Mbele, provided a platform for participants to explore the multitude of career opportunities within these thriving industries.

During the enlightening panel discussion, prominent figures in the maritime sector, including Mbwana Abdhala, Chairman of the Kenya Coast Blue Economy (KECOBE); Engineer Titus Kilonzi from BMA; Captain Ali Mohamed; and BMA Director General John Oming’o, shared their insights on sea-based job prospects for the youth.

Captain Ali Mohamed stressed the core qualities needed for a successful career in the maritime sector, emphasizing patience and discipline. He elaborated on a wide range of on-demand job opportunities, such as engineers, plumbers, caterers, navigators, and oilers. Captain Ali highlighted that these roles can serve as stepping stones towards prosperous maritime careers. He stated, "The institute is here to train and enhance your capacity to grasp these opportunities. The more certified you are, the higher the demand for your skills."

Engineer Titus Kilonzi explained the educational prerequisites for maritime courses, emphasizing that even individuals with qualifications as basic as a class eight dropout could find their place in the industry, with roles like painting, cleaning, and more within reach.

Engineer John Oming’o acknowledged that institutional training remains a significant challenge within the maritime sector and urged coastal institutions to evaluate and bridge the existing gaps. He stated, "We have been able to train institutions and employers while maintaining high standards to boost output in this industry."

Mbwana Abdala from KECOBE provided valuable insights on navigating maritime training institutions, encouraging young aspirants to identify career paths within the shipping and maritime sectors and to explore potential sources of funding for their chosen courses.

The Mombasa Youth Dialogue on Maritime and Shipping (MYD), an annual event organized by Blue Radio, aims to foster engagement between youth and industry stakeholders while shedding light on potential opportunities in the Blue Economy Sector.

The inaugural Mombasa Youth Dialogue on Maritime and Shipping has illuminated the vast array of opportunities available to the youth in these industries. With guidance from experienced professionals and industry leaders, young individuals are better equipped to embark on rewarding careers in the maritime and shipping sectors, contributing to their personal growth and the prosperity of Kenya's blue economy.
